Lippold Park is one of the first municipal softball complexes in the nation with entire infields of synthetic turf.
It is the only synthetic surface with all rubber infill. The infill, made of recycled ground-up tires, is blown into the fibers to form a resilient base. Other synthetics use a sand and rubber infill mix, which is not as sanitary and tends to harden over years. Concrete is poured, drain tiles are laid, then road rock and screenings are added. The 15-foot wide rolls with 2 1/2 inch fibers are stretched from one curb to the other, with 1-foot overlaps that are glued together. After the Sprinturf is put down, the infill is added.

Players wear their normal spikes on the Sprinturf, and no special equipment is required. Infielders will get truer hops, and Sprinturf’s softness will slow balls down slightly, unlike the artificial turf of years past. To help infielders’ depth perception, the areas running from the basepaths to the edge of the outfield grass will be tan. The rest of the infield is green to give the field a look like a high school infield.
Players are invited to put a team together and check out the advantages of Sprinturf for the Spring and Summer Softball Leagues detailed here.
