ACA Illinois and Women in Camping present the 2019 Dare to Lead Award to Sam Thompson

On Tuesday, November 5, Sam Thompson, Crystal Lake Park District Recreation Supervisor received the 2019 Dare to Lead Award at the Women in Camp Summit in St. Charles, IL.  The Women in Camp Summit was created by the American Camping Association of Illinois for women across the camp industry to join in three days of networking, discussion, and professional development.

 

Sam was recognized as someone in the camp industry who:

  • Has contributed significantly to creating real difference-makers 
  • Has worked tirelessly to advance the cause of equality of all members of our community
  • Has gone above and beyond to be a role model to all female identifying individuals
  • Has created a brave and safer space for all to feel like they belong
  • Supported the work of the Women in Camp Summit

Since 1986, Sam has been a Recreation Supervisor for the Crystal Lake Park District. Her passion is providing a quality, inclusive camp experience for children and counselors. Countless children and staff have been impacted by Sam’s dedication and commitment to her career.

Sam has been involved in a wide variety of professional organizations. She is an American Camp Association standards visitor and instructor. She is also a Teams course facilitator and medic first aid instructor. In addition to authoring or co-authoring several articles for the Illinois Park and Recreation Magazine, Sam has spoken at local, state and national conferences. She has been one of ACA's subject matter experts since 2007.
