Ice Skating/Hockey, Sledding & Cross Country Skiing
Embrace winter at one of the Park District’s many outdoor destinations, offering opportunities for ice skating, sledding, and cross country skiing when conditions allow. Parks are open daily from dawn to dusk. For your safety, winter activity areas are evaluated each day based on weather and surface conditions. Ice rinks are carefully inspected by Park District staff, with ice thickness measured at six different points and averaged to ensure safe use. A minimum of 5 inches of ice is required for public skating, and 8 inches is needed before ice can be cleared with a sweeper.
Ice Skating/Hockey
Rink conditions change with weather and temperature fluctuations. The Park District staff inspect ice rinks daily. At each skating rink, ice thickness is averaged from measurements taken from six locations. A minimum of 5" is required to allow public skating. Daily ice rink safety inspections dictate open/closure. Click the blue 'Skate Rink Status' button above to view updates.
Please note: we do not keep separate rink areas for free skate and ice hockey, but skaters tend to section it off on their own into hockey and free skate areas.
