Mission
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for the community by providing high quality nature-based recreation opportunities which include formal and informal education programs and the preservation and restoration of native ecosystems.
At the Crystal Lake Park District Nature Center, you will connect your passions to nature and find your place in the past, present and future eco-systems of the Crystal Lake area.
Open year-round, we provide a unique opportunity for anyone to experience nature through progressive programs, hands-on activities, seasonal exhibits and volunteer opportunities. Located in Veteran Acres Park, the Nature Center is the ideal starting point for a hike through the Veteran Acres Woods and Wingate Prairie.

Calling all Pokémon trainers: It’s time to take on the Nature Center Gym Challenge! Join us at the Nature Center to learn about our local ecosystems, and the Pokémon that would thrive here. We’ll make cards featuring newly discovered Pokémon (that we’ll design ourselves), have a couple battles, and catch ‘em all on a hike around the pond with Pokémon Go.

Surviving Wildfires 122418
Do you ever wonder about the science behind the natural disasters in the “I Survived” books? In this class we will learn about the California wildfires of 2018 and explore the importance of prescribed burns, fire tornados and campfire safety. As an extra treat, we'll even have smores roasted over a fire! *Participants may get wet in an outdoor obstacle game.

Exploring Nature Art - Stick Spellbook 122419
Book binding is what holds pages and covers together. In this class, we’ll create our own books using twigs as a spine. We’ll decorate homemade paper covers with pressed leaves and flowers, and you’ll leave with a spellbook any witch would be jealous of!

Deep Sea Deep Dive 122421
Big teeth, giant eyes, and glowing skin - the deep sea is full of frights to learn about this Halloween. In this program we’ll learn about life in this ocean ecosystem, and how some of these creepy adaptations help creatures survive in the deep. We’ll play games, build a filter feeder, and take home a glowing jellyfish lantern.

We will kick off the festivities with hot cocoa and fairy delights to eat as we decide on our building plan. This year we’ll be building a lake of crystals surrounded by fairy lake houses. Exhibits
Since the Nature Center re-opened in 1998, we have upgraded and are constantly striving to improve our facilities, but our goals have remained the same. Open year-round, we provide a unique opportunity for anyone to experience nature through progressive programs, hands-on activities, seasonal exhibits and volunteer opportunities.
In December 2023, the Nature Center was one of thirty-six Illinois museums to receive a total of $19.7 million in state capital investments to improve their facilities and develop new exhibits. The grant funding amount awarded to the Crystal Lake Park District Nature Center was $363,000. This amount covered a complete redesign and construction of Nature Center exhibits. Many new exhibits were added and existing exhibits were enhanced and updated. On June 1, 2024, the Nature Center re-opened after a 5 month closure to completely renovate the interior exhibits.
Butterflies and Bees
Every summer we have live butterflies fluttering about our Butterfly Habitat. There is no registration or fee required, although a $1 per person donation is appreciated. Our see-through bee hive allows visitors to watch how a live bee hive works in action. The butterflies will begin to arrive and the bees will become most active after Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Special Nature Center Programs
The Traveling Naturalist
Are you looking for a different idea for your club or organization's next meeting? You can schedule on of our Traveling Naturalists to visit your meeting! These 1 to 1.5 hour programs include hands-on activities and knowledgeable instructors. We have a variety of topics to present within these 1-2 hour programs, or we can tailor a program to meet your needs. Topics include: Formerly Living Things, Silly Science, Our Geological Past, Decomposers and many others. Contact Kimberly Ralston or call 815.455.1763.
Fee: $100
Field Trips & Group Programs
School districts, preschools, home school, clubs and more have benefited from our field trip programs. A typical program will last from 1-2 hours and will feature a hike and multiple educational station covering most any nature topic. Contact Kimberly Ralston or call 815.455.1763.
Woodcarving Drop-In
For Seniors
For both the novice and experienced carver, this informal group is for anyone interested in woodcarving. There is no fee involved, but you need to bring your own tools. The group meets at the Nature Center twice a month. For more information, contact Bill Markison at 815.451.3553.
Our birthday party programs are 2.5 hours and consist of 15 minutes for set-up, a one hour instructor led program, one hour of ‘free time’ for gifts and cake (not provided) and 15 minutes for cleanup. To book a party, email Kimberly Ralston or call 815.455.1763.
Fee: $200 (includes up to 20 participants). Max of 50 people. We kindly request two weeks notice.
Animal Kingdom
Come discover the wonderful kingdom of animals with us! Pretend you are one of these amazing creatures as we play a game, search for something walking or crawling on a guided hike and learn about the wide world of creatures that share our planet with us.
Campfire Capers
Enjoy a crackling wood campfire with your friends while singing songs, telling stories and eating s’mores. You’ll have a “roaring” time as you learn different techniques of starting fires and how to make a safe campfire. End the program by learning a little bit about the forest with a guided hike through the woods!
Explorer
Explore the world with us! Whether you are searching for treasure or trying to discover a new species this party will bring out the adventurer in you! Learn some tools and tricks of the trade and find your way through our forest with your new skills. Finish by putting your skills to the test with a challenge and find out some of the rewards adventurers can find along the way.
Fossil Find
If you like dinosaurs and other ancient creatures, then you are going to “dig” this party. You and your guests will examine real fossils, discover facts about dinosaurs and learn how
paleontologists dig for fossils, and can take one home with you!
Nature Tots
We will begin with a story of your choosing. Then, we will complete an activity and a craft based on the story read. Some of our favorite stories are Bear Hunt, Hungry, Hungry Caterpillar, Ginko and Moon, Stellaluna and more! If your tot has a favorite story, we
would love to craft a party around it! Unsure which story to choose? Let us help by selecting one of our favorites.
Woodland Fairies
We’ll learn secrets about woodland fairies and explore the woods to see if we can find them! Along the way, we will discover a fairy house and other surprises. We’ll use what we learn to make an age appropriate fairy craft.
